A brief introduction to exciting, eclectic, edgy St Kilda.

Ask any Melbournian to name their favourite inner-city location and you'll be met with a list of possibilities: St Kilda for a touch of beach culture, Carlton for a taste of Italy or Chapel Street South Yarra for fashion and shopping. Or the heart of the City itself with lots of new cafes, clubs and galleries opening up in the lanes and back streets of the CBD.

Carlton, South Yarra and St Kilda all have their share of hip cafes, bars and boutiques and all have a village feel that makes you want to stroll the streets and soak up the ambiance. But if you're a visitor to Melbourne and looking for a place to stay that's close to everything (including the beach) then it's difficult to go past St Kilda.

This eclectic, edgy suburb has cleaned up it's image in recent years, exchanging pawn shops for cafes and bars and boarding houses for ritzy apartments. Much of the action and many of the places to visit can be found on the two main shopping strips, Fitzroy and Acland Streets or on the St Kilda foreshore.

Acland Street is known for its decadent cakes and pastries as well as a new generation of eateries and boutiques. Away from the main drags, the historic Esplanade Hotel or 'Espy' has undergone a makeover. Along with the Prince Bandroom, The Esplanade Hotel is a key venue for live music. On Sundays the same Esplanade is packed with arts and crafts stalls.

At the north end of Acland Street is St Kilda's most famous landmark, Luna Park, sitting next door to another piece of architectural history, The Palais Theatre, soon to be restored as part of the St Kilda Triangle development.

Down on the foreshore Donovans and Stokehouse offer fine dining with magical views of the sea. The walking/ cycling/ rollerblading track outside joins St Kilda with all the other bayside suburbs including Port Melbourne. The famous St Kilda Pier ends with a picture-perfect kiosk and breakwater.

And all this is just a 20 minute tram ride away from the CBD with all that the wonderful City of Melbourne has to offer; art galleries, world-class shopping, more restaurants and cafes, Federation Square, cinemas, theatres, concert halls and music venues.
